Holding Pattern

Personally i think that the script is a sad story about a struggling assylm seeker trying to make his way in the UK.

Scene 1: Bogdan walks down the side of a road and then stops and stands next to the busy A-road dressed in a badly fitting dark suit with muddy white trainers. He is unshaved and his hair is greasy and long. In his chest pocket he has what look like guides to the country side and UK cities. As cars drive past -some ignoring him,some honking horns at him- he sits down on his small brown leather suitcase and puts his hands in his head.

Emotional content: i want this scene to be played with a sense of desperation and confusion.

Beats: Bogdan walks, almost stumbling,looks as if he could cry.
He suddenly stops, looks around him
With a shrug he appears to give up
he bangs his fists against his thighs then head and sits down



Scene 2: Bogdan stands infront of the government building looking at the sign on the wall and then to the piece of paper, he does this action a few times. He is wearing the same suit and but has on a white shirt. He has shaved but left a thick tash above his lips. He walks past some posters and pretends to read them with intense interest. He awkwardly sits down on a chair and places his suitcase on his lap, he removes a sandwhich with a bite out of it already and has another before placing it back in the paper bag.
he looks around with his fingers flickering on his knees, he spots a water cooler, heads over to use it but isnt too sure how to use the tap. from behind him a tired man in a badly fitting shirt takes Bogdans cup and places it under the tap for him and fills his cup before handing it to him and returning to his "Customer services" post.

Emotional Content: For this scene i see Bogdan seeming bewildered and untrusting of the government building. i want to keep the actual purpose of the building ambiguous because this will add to Bogdans own emotions. The customer services worker -although helping with the water- is meant to be a threatening character.

Beats: Bogdan stands still infront of the building with his suitcase in one hand and and a crumpled letter in the other
After walking in he leans right in to read the posters
Slowly and quietly sits down
Slowly and quietly puts his suitcase on his lap and opens it
Tries to open sandwhich bag quietly but grimesses as it crinkles
Takes a bite and returns the sandwhich to the suitcase and suitcase to the floor
He spots the water cooler and makes alittle whistling sound followed by the tick
Picks up a cap and then looks about the office
Tries pressing the top of the tap
Swivvels bottle on the top alittle
Customer services worker comes from behind Bogdan and abruptly grabs the cup
He places it under the tap and fills the cup
Turns to Bogdan with the Cup, passes it to him, turns and walks

Scene 3: Bogdan sits on a cheap messy sofa in a dressing gown reading a tabloid paper. he does not turn the page once, he looks at a translation dictionary every now and then. to his left he has a pint of water and to his right he has danish pastry laden with icing and a huge cherry. He places his paper down and reaches for the pastry, he then stands up with a stretch and a yawn. he then heads over to the window over the looking the street below and eats.

Emotional Content: this scene is happy and Bogdan is content in his bedsit with what he has.

Beats: Bogdans eyes scan the newspaper page
He reaches reaches for his translation book and finds a page and reads
He turns his attention back to his paper
He places the paper down next to him open
Picks up the plate with the pastry on
Stands up with it in his hand and strench his body out and yawns
Then heads over to the window and looks out while eating

Scene 4: Bogdan puts his empty plate down and heads over to a small cassette player and hits play. An upbeat eastern european song plays. He dances around the room to the tune smilling and ocasionally yelping. He is still dressed in his dressing gown. the letterbox flickers, Bogdan hears it and jiggs over to the door to retrieve the envelope. He comes back to the living room but doesnt read the letter instead throws it on the sofa and carries on his dance.

Emotional Content: In this scene Bogdan is still very happy and up lifted by the sounds of his home country.

Beats: Bogdan places his plate down
Heads over to the cassette player and presses play
He dances to the music
Hears the letter box
He dances over to the door
Comes back in and throws letter on the sofa
Dances again

Scene 5: Bogdan is in his dark suit, unshaved sitting very stiffly on a park bench, behind him a few kids are kicking a ball around. he has his suitcase close next to him. he's looking tired as he reaches into his and pulls out a handfull of loose coins and counts them in his best english. He smiles to himself that hes managed to count it but then it dawns on him how much it is.

Emotional Content: This scene although Bogdan is surrounded by people having fun he feels alone and low. There is a moment of muted joy as he counts the small amount of money he has in english.

Beats: Bogdan reaches into his pocket
Pulls out his cash
Counts it with his finger
Smiles
frowns

Scene 6: Bogdan is wearing his dark suit but has his jacket over the back of the chair he is sitting on facing the libray computer. He looks to his left and then to his right and carries on slowly writting his email.

Emotional content: Bogdan is lonely again and writting an email home for support

Beats: Bogdan looks left
Looks right
Looks central

Scene 7: Bogdan is back in his dressing gown on his messy sofa. he decides to open the letter he recieved. he understands most of the letter but still has to refer to his translation book in his right hand sometimes. As he reads more of it his face sulks more and more. hes not happy with what hes reading.

Emotional Content: The emotion for this scene is that Bogdan is slowly starting to realise that his life in the UK may be coming to an end.

Beats: Bogdan notices the letter left on the paper
Picks it up and opens it
Starts reading
Picks up his book for a translation
carries on reading
Finishes and throws letter away

Scene 8: Bogdan is wearing his Dark suit with a white shirt. He's outside the government building in a cue of about 4-5 people who are English and chatting away. in his left hand he holds his suitcase and in his right he is clutching the letter he recieved. As the cue shuffles along Bogdan keeps bumping into the person infront of him because he is not concentrating. the person in front is visably getting annoyed but decides not to take action.

Emotional Content: Bogdans journey is coming to an end and this is reflected in his mood and the cue of people who again are ignoring him and alienating him further.

Beats: Bogdan is standing, looking tense.
He mumbles to himself
Bogdan bumps into the man infront
He mumbles to himself again
Bumps into the man again and mumbles an apology

Scene 9: Bogdan swims from left to right of the screen underwater doing breaststroke.

Emotional content: for this scene i want it to feel like Bogdan is completely alone and isolated from the world by the water.

Beats: Bogdan swims underwater

He then reaches into his pocket and pulls out the letter without looking at it again he rips it up. he then stands up from his perch and drops the pieces. With one thumb out in the road he bends down to pick up his suitcase.

Emotional Content: This scene is the same as scene one but it has a final stamp of lonelyness and desperation but hitchiking.

Beats: Bogdan walks, almost stumbling,looks as if he could cry.
